| Back injury won't hold me back: Donnelly |
21-Aug-09
Eugene Donnelly admits there were times this week when he didn't think he would be starting the Toddsleap.com Ulster Rally this afternoon. The recurrence of an old back injury forced him to abort his pre-rally reconnaissance and abandon plans for a final test run in his Skoda Fabia in favour of twice daily physiotherapy sessions. |

"I've been flat out for the past few days - flat on my back, this is," he was able to joke last night. It is an old injury which flares up now and again but it couldn't have picked a worse time to return. I was doing my recce on Sunday with my co-driver Paddy Toner and we had to give up."
"Since then I’ve been in the hands of my physio who says I'm mad to even think about driving a rally car this weekend. But to be honest he has done a great job and I’m feeling a good deal better so, fingers crossed, I'll be on the start line. But the first bump or big jump will tell me whether it is a wise decision or not."
The rally, which kicks off from Antrim at 2:30pm this afternoon, is an important one for the Maghera driver who is on course for a record-equalling fifth Irish Tarmac championship if he can see off the challenge of Gareth MacHale. |
